Here, you can see the back wall of The Vault, where all of the copper and fiber from the outside goes enters the building. Each one of these trunks serves thousands of customers.

They are filled with compressed air, and the pressure is monitored, so that any cut can be quickly detected -- even before communication failures are detected. Each trunk is equipped with transponders so that repair personnel can locate cuts rapidly.
